Creative Director Alex Hutchinson of this excellent game, takes us out of doubt about the changes and improvements thereof.
In Ubisoft several eyebrows were raised when the brave revealed plans for Assassin'sCreed III this month. In a break with the Renaissance theme that has dominated the last three games, ACIII changed its focus to the desperate and bloody days of the American Revolution in a history spanning 30 years. Change is staged by a change in the character, as Kenway Connor takes the center of the screen as an assassin caughtbetween rising atrocities of the Patriots and Redcoats
Question: When it comes to the basic ingredients of American history, Americans knowthis material. Do you feel pressure to move people like George Washington in a certain way? Do you have freedom with him?
Alex Hutchinson: One of the best things about Assassin's Creed III is that we have a lot of information this time. In previous games we were filling holes, we knew about what happened, or an opinion of what happened, so we had much to do. But now we knowpretty well where the Founding Fathers were every day of the revolution and what they were thinking. There were many letter writers, so we had all sorts of crazy informationwith which to work, Ben Franklin weighing the national bird should be a turkey instead ofan eagle "thief", or his views on women and more.
Question: What inspired the name of the protagonist Connor Kenway?
AH: The Native American name is very difficult to pronounce, is Ratohnhaké: ton. We take it very seriously when we decided to have a native Assassino did not want a Patriotor Redcoat. We also liked the idea of having someone from a minority as the main character, especially one who is not represented in popular culture.
This also involves many risks, we have hired an adviser on Native America to make surewe do things properly, and the actor who voices Connor is also a Native American.
Question: There are epic battle sequences between the Redcoats and Patriots. How tofight Connor in the battlefield?
AH: The narrative of the game is "Assassins against Templars," not about saving the American Revolution. You are involved in aspects of it, the story starts before therevolution begins and continues thereafter. So wherever you are in these battles, you'll never see in the line of infantry firing a rifle or serving as a soldier. You have an ulterior motive in combat: Connor's goal is killing a specific person. Anyone who lives or dies in this battle is not about you.
Question: For the first time, Connor has the ability to use two weapons at once. How does this change the pace of combat?
AH: We wanted it bring forth the feeling of driving a predator, so all your two-handcombat is, for example with his tomahawk and knife, or the hidden blade and the knife. There is much new equipment, and if you've seen movies like The Last of the Mohicansprobably not imagine some of them. But the main battle system has been completelyrebuilt. What the buttons do, how they do, the types of enemies, strategy and more.
